We were supposed to have a Camp Host position up at Carmel CA. At the last minute we were told they had
given the site to someone else.
After losing Carmel, we stumbled onto a KOA at Weott, CA. I cleaned the bathrooms, 3 cabins and cooking
area, 7 days a week. I did not mind this but we had problems with the transfer my wife's medications from NV to CA. We had
to leave after a month to go back to Las Vegas to see the doctor. I informed them of this and told them if they wanted me
back after we see the doctor let me know. I waited a couple of weeks and contacted them many times without a reply.
Agua Caliente Hot Springs for the San Diego County contacted us about an open position. We had been there
many times, for many years, as just a camper. My wife loved the hot springs. I took the position not really expecting what
was to follow. They don't have "Camp Hosts" but "Resident Volunteers", to free up the people that called themself Rangers.
I cleaned and stocked all the bathrooms, open the pools, did the chemicals for the pools, broke down the
filters for the pools, cleaned the filters and back flushed them. Open the pools, cleaned the showers. Mostly took care of
the pools and pool areas, bathrooms and showers. After I finished I cut/picked out Mistletoe out of the trees. I cleaned the
firepits and sites. Help the campers and answered questions for them. Informed the office people, when things went wrong to
get help. Most of the things I thought should have been done by the "Maintance" people, like at the state parks and such.
It was hard work but we stayed.
The office people were nice to us, and they had 3 other Camp Host trailers. They had a strange way of
"Banking Hours", that freed up 2 sets or more, of the other Volunteers to leave most of the season leaving mostly myself and
one volunteer. The other also did the "Banking Hours" but was not gone as much. I had "Banked Hours" but never used them.
Many days I worked 2 or more hours past my shift. If we had to go back to Las Vegas, we went on my days off.
I enjoyed staying here, but we like "Camp Hosting" much better. Interacting with the campers more.
All the "Rangers" office people were really nice to us and one expressed
his appreciation to us with the sites of San Diego. We will always remember him.
